A fumble with the fine print has seen Ford Australia unwittingly release the first pricing details of the all-new 2011 Ford Ranger – exactly the kind of information car companies like to play close to their chests until the vehicle goes on sale.
We can reveal Ford’s proposed price of the Ford Ranger XLT Double Cab Pick-Up six-speed automatic as $58,500 drive away. It’s currently hidden deep in the terms and conditions section of Ford’s latest promotional campaign for the Ranger, dubbed the Global Ford Ranger Challenge.
The terms and conditions also reveal for the first time the new Ranger’s ‘PX’ model designation. The current Ford Ranger has the model code ‘PK’.
Confirming the inadvertent price revelation this morning was Ford Australia’s Sinead McAlary. When asked if pricing details of the new Ranger were out in the public domain yet, Ms McAlary said they would not be released until closer to the vehicle’s launch.
“We can’t confirm specific pricing details this far out,” Ms McAlary said.
She would not confirm the exact timing of the pricing announcement, but said it would be around the time of the vehicle’s Australian launch, which is on track to be late in the third quarter (most likely September).
As detailed yesterday, the winner of the Ranger Challenge competition – a social media campaign encouraging Australians to push the locally designed and engineered ute to its limits – will get to keep a new Ford Ranger.
The competition’s terms and conditions say:
“The Grand Prize Winner will receive a PX Ford Ranger Double Cab XLT (actual colour to be determined by Ford) with an approximate driveaway value of up to $58,500 (the “Grand Prize”). The Grand Prize value is based upon the recommended manufacturer’s list price at the time of printing (inclusive of GST), 12 months registration in the Grand Prize Winner’s State or Territory of residence, 12 months compulsory third party insurance, dealer delivery charges, stamp duty and where applicable, luxury vehicle tax.”The terms and conditions specify that the Ranger must be collected from an authorised Ford dealer between October 15 and November 15.
Not specified is what engine will power the Grand Prize vehicle, which suggests that the XLT variant will be available with only one engine, likely to be the 147kW/470Nm 3.2-litre five-cylinder diesel.
Other engines confirmed for the new Ranger line-up include a 110kW/375Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine and a 122kW/226Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
The drive away price of the XLT Double Cab automatic is around $10,000 higher than the outgoing PK Ranger XLT Crew Cab five-speed auto. One NSW Ford dealer confirmed the PK XLT Crew Cab auto normally cost around $48,990 drive away, but said that specific model was currently on sale for $40,990 until the end of June.
In light of this, expect the PX Ranger XLT Double Cab to be significantly better equipped than the outgoing model when full details emerge around the time of its launch (if not unintentionally sooner).

The engine range in Europe includes two Ford Duratorq TDCi diesel engines – 2.2 litre with 150PS and 375Nm and 3.2 litre with 200PS and 470Nm of torque. The small diesel achieves 7.6 litres per 100 km (37.2 mpg) and the bigger has an average fuel consumption of just 8.4 litres per 100 km. With a generous 80 litre fuel tank, 2011 Ranger also offers one of the longest ranges in its segment, with as much as 1 000km (620 miles) possible between fill-ups.
The towing capacity is best-in-class 3350kg and the payload capacity is up to 1333 kg.
The options list includes SAT NAV system, Bluetooth®connectivity, voice control, Rear View Camera System with a display integrated in the rear view mirror, etc.
The safety is granted thanks to new side curtain airbags and thorax-protecting front-seat side airbags fitted as standard. Furthermore, 2011 Ranger Wildtrak includes Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

If there are any imperfections, they are either removed at this point or the wheel is re-formed altogether. Chrome wheels and rims are brought into a special oven to be heat-treated. Heat-treatment makes the wheels more durable. After they are taken out of the oven and cooled they are tested again, this time for leaks as well as for reaction to impact.The custom wheels being used in the tests are not the ones that are sold to customers. Instead, the prototype wheels are kept for future casts and forgings. Wheels that pass all tests for quality and durability are used by the manufacturer before being subsequently mass-produced for distribution. Finally, custom wheels are sprayed with primer and once again scanned for any possible marks or imperfections. Whichever finish a customer chooses for their custom wheels is now applied at this point, whether it is chrome, chrome-plating, black-powder coating, or paint.

Ford has also confirmed the death of the Explorer Sport-Trac four-door model, which may possibly open the door for a four-door Ranger. Our trusty spy photographers have captured the next-generation Ford Ranger out testing several times now, but speculation continues to swirl over whether or not this trucklet will be available for U.S. consumption. After all, there's been talk of a more entry-level F-150 that would sort of fill the void of not having a dedicated Ranger replacement, but Ford has never ruled out the possibility of an all-new small pickup.
While talking about the new 2011 Explorer on CNBC's Squawk Box this morning, Ford's president and CEO, Alan Mulally, appears to have unintentionally confirmed a new Ranger for North America. While discussing the whole lineup of Stateside Ford products, Mulally specifically says "new Ranger," which leads us to believe that all of these test mules we've seen might not just be for our overseas friends (something that we've been wondering about anyhow, as we've seen more Stateside evaluations of this 'overseas' truck than any other foreign market vehicle in recent memory). No, Mulally doesn't come right out and say that an all-new Ranger is headed our way, but we've continued to hear scuttlebutt about just such a truck from our sources, and given that his remarks were otherwise confined to North American products, we're beginning to think that a new Ranger is all but confirmed.

The Ford Ranger debuted for the 1983 model year as the American automaker's newest light pickup. It was initially outfitted with a 2.0L OHC four-cylinder engine, but a similar 2.3L configuration that kicked out 86 horsepower was also available. Other engine options included a 2.2L diesel and a more powerful 2.8L Cologne V6 capable of 115 horsepower. A few years later, a 2.9L V6 replaced the original and brought with it an extra 25 hp. A year later, Ford introduced the SuperCab, which was 17 inches longer. The SuperCab showed off more room inside the cab as well as optional jump seats. Also in 1986, the Ranger GT rolled off the line. The GT was equipped with the Cologne V6 married to a five-speed manual transmission or A4LD automatic transmission. In 1989, the second-generation Ford Ranger premiered, featuring a notable redesign that displayed new fenders, headlights, and revised front-end, with a new grille and hood. 1993 ushered in another set of changes for the Ford Ranger. The exterior was modified to display a more aerodynamic body with new fender flares. Inside, new seats were introduced. As for engine options, a 2.3L inline four-cylinder, 3.0L V6, and a 4.0L V6 were offered. Making its way into the lineup in 1993 was the "Splash", a version of the Ranger that displayed a sportier presence thanks to aluminum wheels and a lowered suspension. In 1995, the Ford Ranger saw another redesign. A driver's side airbag (passenger air bags became optional a year later) and a new dash-panel were implemented. Four-wheel antilock brakes were now included standard on 4x4 Rangers. Towards the end of the '90s, the Ranger was redesigned once again. Considered the third generation of the truck, the Ford Ranger saw changes to every major department. A new 2.5L SOHC inline four-cylinder engine became standard, but it would only last until 2001, when a 2.3L Duratec inline four-cylinder took over. Also in 2001, a car grills, hood, air filter, headlights, and bumper were employed for the front while the taillights were refreshed in the back. Throughout the next few years, other restyling efforts would make their way to the Ranger, including an updated grille and new turn signals.
